In many cultures’ kids grow up playing pickup soccer from the time they are able to walk. And sometimes sooner!
These days kids get into formal programs much sooner and they are more and more demanding, so often they never get the chance to play without the pressure of a coach or having to perform at a certain level.
There are many benefits to playing pickup soccer. Not just for youth players, but for all adults soccer players of all ages and skill levels:
- The biggest benefit is the game is the teacher. Players are able to experiment and learn from mistakes (and successes) and not be afraid to try new things. This is often not the case when there is a coach that is highlighting their mistakes.
- Players will learn better communication. Since there is no coach that is barking orders from the sideline, players will need to communicate with each other on the field. This will help with awareness and understanding of the game.
- Small-sided soccer encourages personal growth with the ball. When playing in small groups individual footwork, skills and tricks are encouraged. This will help build a player’s confidence and ability in handling the ball.
- In short-sided pickup games, you have to play at both ends of the field. This teaches players how to support each other and transition from offense to defense. Pickup soccer also highlights the need for width and depth on the field.
- Playing pickup up as an adult is also a great way to stay in shape and give you a chance to play the beautiful game you love as long as you are physically capable.
