How To Stay in Shape Without Soccer. No Really!

working out at home

With the COVID-19 outbreak continuing and most of us stuck at home with no soccer, you can still stay in shape without soccer, really you can!

There are a lot of services and fitness companies that are stepping up and offering free workouts for people as they confined to their homes.

First Let’s Start With One Of Our Own CentralPASoccer Fans

This one is more like soccer drills, but it will keep you active. Noah O’Donnell reached out after our last post:

Because of this pandemic many of the youth soccer teams in my area have canceled their seasons. Because of this I started a youtube channel, on which I post a daily at home soccer session. To help the players have some practice.

Here’s a link to his YouTube channel Team Flash. Check it out, follow him and make sure you share his channel too.

Train To Improve Your Speed

Use the unplanned vacation from soccer to improve your game. You can’t go to the gym, but you can use kinetic resistance bands to strengthen your legs, hips, and core. This will help you increase your speed, stability and overall strength, and take your game to the next level.

At Home Virtual Workouts Were Already a Thing

If you were already not a fan of the gym you probably already know about Peleton. They are one of the leaders in virtual fitness with their bikes, but did you know they have other fitness programs too? Strength, yoga, stretching, boot camp and cardio workouts on its app, as well as meditation exercises and outdoor running coaching.

Here’s the best part though.  Peloton has extended its 30-day free trial period to 90 days, if you sign up through April 30. After that, you’ll pay $12.99 a month.

Just Do It

Nike is stepping it up with its Nike Training Club by waiving the $14.99 a month fee for its premium service indefinitely. When you download the app you’ll get access over 185 free 15-45 minute workouts (cardio and yoga to name a couple). Plus, running wellness and training programs, as well as nutrition.

I Lift Things Up and Put Them Down

The actual gyms are closed, but Planet Fitness is offering free 20 minute workouts on its Facebook page. No membership required.

Go Local To Get Fit

Well sort of… Les Mills is partnering with local gyms that already offer their classes.

It’s easy to keep exercising at home with free access to LES MILLS On Demand.
Talk to your club to secure a special subscription offer.

Have Kids? Try Yoga

Cosmic Yoga For Kids has free themed Yoga classes you can do with your kids. My wife and son did a session that followed the whole Frozen movie. Yep, the whole thing! Grab a yoga mat for more comfort.

This list is just a start. Let us know if you have other resources.

Missing Soccer? Try These Online Resources

watch classic soccer games online - Stream soccer matches to your tv

Here in Central PA, we are into our second week of social distancing. The kids are home, you’ve set up a home office or maybe two and now you’re looking for a break. Maybe you need a break from work and the doom and gloom of the news cycle.

I’ve seen on a few soccer-related Facebook groups that people are still organizing pickup sessions. Please don’t. The only way the social distancing will help is if everyone adheres to it. Getting a group together to play pickup soccer, doesn’t fit into this. It is very difficult to steal the ball from another play from 6 feet away. So please don’t do it.

Unfortunately, there are no live soccer games going on anywhere as leagues have postponed games indefinitely. The last league still playing was in Australia, but it seems they haven’t been able to escape the inevitable shutdown either.

‘Mission impossible’: Australia suspends A-League

We’re Here to Help You Find Soccer Games To Watch

Use Google To Find Your Favorite Classic Soccer Matches To Stream

As an FC Bayern Fan, I was happy I was able to find the all-German Champions League final when Bayern Dortmund. All I had to do was Google “watch 2013 champions league final”. What was cool was I was able to share the game with my son, also a Bayern fan (like he had a choice, ha), who wasn’t alive in 2013.

Another free option that I found with “watch old premier league games” is But I was pleasantly surprised that they have a bunch of other games too.

  • Premier League
  • Women’s World Cup
  • World Cup
  • Europa League
  • LaLiga
  • Bundesliga
  • Serie A

They have games from pretty much every country league and national cups.

So, get out there and start Googling your favorite games!

Looking for Soccer Movies and Documentaries?

Amazon Prime Videos has lots of soccer-related movies, paid and free.

Netflix also has many movies and documentaries about soccer. Including a great documentary, Becoming Champions. It is a series that looks at countries and athletes that have managed to become world champions.

Pay Services Are Also Have Old Soccer Games has all the Bundesliga games since 2016 as well as 2.Bundesliga, MLS and some international friendlies.

NBCSports is showing Premier League games on regular TV so check your local schedule.

ESPNPlus also has an Archive but it is a bit tricky to find the game you want.

This is definitely not an exhaustive list. Please let us know you have found other ways to keep watching the beautiful game.

Upcoming Adult Outdoor Soccer Leagues Spring 2020

soccer is simple, but is is difficult to play simple

Spring is right around the corner. That means Spring adult outdoor soccer is too! If you haven’t joined a league you definitely need to get moving.

Below is a list of upcoming leagues in the central PA area.

Lancaster County and Berks County Men’s over 40 Men Travel League

Also known as Eastern Pennsylvania Amateur Soccer League. they have a website, but it is broken so you are better off contacting Bryn Weckel directly if you have questions.

This is a league where you register a team. If you don’t have a team you can let the league know and they will pass your name on to the captains of the teams in the league. The games are on Sunday afternoon. The season starts on April 19.

Contact Info: Bryn Weckel

Wick Futball League – Over 30 Men

This is technically a summer league, but it starts in April and runs through August. It is one of the best values for the money in the area. This is a league where you sign up and you are assigned a team. It is for all skill levels and they generally try to make the teams evenly matched with a variety of players so the games are competitive. Registration is not open yet, but we’ll post when it is.

The Wick Futball Over 30 Recreation Soccer League plays on Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM. We play on full-size fields, have licensed referees, and play full ninety (90) minute games. We have twenty-two or more players on a team and use liberal substitutions. While the league is competitive, it is intended to be “recreational,” therefore, we do not keep standings, have playoffs, or “crown” a league champion. New players are welcome.

Capital Area Soccer League – Men’s Travel

It looks like the Open Men’s league has folded, I reached out to find out if that is true. They definitely still have Over 30 Men and Over 40 Men. Both leagues are setup so teams are registered, but the league will also help you find a team.

Registration is currently open and the spring outdoor season starts April 5.

For more info:

Harrisburg Area Women’s Soccer League – Over 30

This league may already be closed for registration, but I have to admit their site is another sports manager site and they are notoriously bad. I had a lot of trouble navigating the site. It keeps giving me errors. So if you are looking to play check out the site or contact them directly. I think the season also starts April 5th, but sometimes I get that info on the site sometimes I don’t.

This is also a league where teams register, but the league will help players find teams.

Penn Legacy to Host Soccer-a-Thon!

four diamonds fund thon fundraiser logoPenn Legacy will host Soccer-a-Thon, a very special day coming up on Saturday June 13th at Lanco Fieldhouse. On that day they are trying to have a game of soccer going for 12 full hours, from 9 in the morning to 9 at night. They are doing this to try and raise money for the Four Diamonds Fund at Hershey Children’s Hospital. The Four Diamonds Fund is named after a story that a little boy wrote shortly before he lost his battle with cancer. In it he tells of a brave knight who searched for the four diamonds of courage, wisdom, honesty, and strength in order to be released from captivity by an evil sorceress. The four diamonds are symbolic of the traits that the boy believed were necessary for him to overcome cancer. The Fund itself offsets the cost of treatment for any family in Pennsylvania that has a child with cancer and provides much needed money to fund pediatric cancer research. The fund has helped more than 3,200 families since it was created in 1972, hours after the little boy who wrote the story passed away.

In order to pull this event off they are REALLY going to need everyone’s help! They basically need to have enough players at the event each hour to have some sort of game going all the way through the 12 hours. One hour it may only be 3v3 on 1 field, the next hour we may 6v6 on all 3 fields, but we WILL keep it going. Once you know how many hours you can play for (only 3 in a row, then you must take at least a 2 hour break) then you go out and try to get your friends, family, neighbors to sponsor you. Then you show up on the day and just play and have fun!
